Although the cost and availability of this technology in retail stores are unknown, it appears to be amazing.

Samsung teased the world’s first transparent MicroLED display during its yearly First Look event at CES 2024 on Sunday night. Although the price and release date of this technology are yet unknown, Samsung demonstrated the differences between its transparent MicroLED display and transparent OLED and transparent LCD displays by putting them side by side. In addition to being noticeably brighter than the others, the MicroLED panel had a completely frameless design and a more transparent glass surface that made it simpler to view items behind it.

It’s difficult to put into words the effect that Samsung’s translucent tiny OLED screens have in-person—content appears to float in midair like a hologram. The demo unit further enhanced the appearance of a floating screen because it was freestanding and only a few centimeters thick. Additionally, visuals were exceptionally sharp because of the high pixel density of tiny LEDs. Samsung has only released one vertical video so far, but it should give you an indication of what we witnessed:

A representative for Samsung claims that transparent MicroLED displays are less affected by ambient light since they are brighter than transparent OLED panels.

The bad news is that it will be a while before these new screens are reasonably priced, with Samsung’s current line of non-transparent MicroLED TVs costing $150,000 for a 110-inch model.

Samsung isn’t the only Korean business, incidentally, showcasing a large transparent display at CES this year. The OLED T, which is coming on sale this year, unlike Samsung’s variant, was unveiled by its enduring rival LG. With 4K resolution and LG’s wireless audio and video transmission technology, the OLED T is reportedly the first wireless transparent OLED TV. This is an advancement over the company’s (transparent) M3 model, which had its CES debut at least one year ago. With a single button press, you can raise or lower the OLED T’s contrast screen, which rolls down into a box at the base of the device.
